911 Safety

Enhanced 9-1-1 (E-9-1-1)

If you find yourself in an emergency and need help now, call 9-1-1.

E9-1-1 is a system that gives your address and other information to the 9-1-1 Operator who reads the information on a computer screen. You can use a TTY or landline phone to make a 9-1-1 call.  This makes it faster for you to get help through 9-1-1.

Video Relay Service
You can call 9-1-1 through Video Relay Service (VRS) on your videophone.  VRS can connect you to a 9-1-1 Operator, but the system may have a few problems.

IP Relay
You can also use IP Relay.  You can access IP Relay on the computer or on your pager.  It may take a while before you are connected to the right 9-1-1 Center.

Cell Phone
You can also use a cell phone to call 9-1-1.  The E911 system for cell phones will show the your cell phone number on the Operator’s computer screen.  You will need to tell the Operator exactly where you are located (address) so that they can help you.

Voice Phone or TTY
Another option is to dial 9-1-1 on a voice phone or TTY, and leave the phone off the hook. The 9-1-1 system allows the Operator to know where you are calling from even if you are not using the phone.  If you are experiencing a heart attack or if there is an intruder in your house, dial 9-1-1 and leave the phone off the hook. DO NOT HANG UP. Most of the time the Operator will call police to go to the same place where you made the 9-1-1 call.
